Clevedon parents hunt, gather, cook recipes

The Clevedon School parents who worked on the fundraising cookbook...this is about as close as you will get to learning their identities!

Not another school cookbook! Well yes... and no. Yes, Clevedon School parents have put together a cookbook as a fundraiser. But, no, this is a cook book that goes where no school cookbook as gone before. Hunt, Gather, Cook is a top-quality cookbook printed on glossy paper with professional standard photography and printing. It would not look out of place on any coffee table. The book is the result of nearly eight months of work by a group of seven school mums, led by Rae Poole. Their identity is a bit mysterious – partly for fun, and partly because • TO PAGE 3

Maraetai dad dies in hit and run

Tributes have flowed and friends have gathered this week at the Maraetai Beach home of the Samuels family, who lost dad and husband Richard in a hit and run incident in Meadowlands last Saturday morning. Richard Samuels, 41, (known by friends as Nutts and Nutta), was a diesel mechanic with a transport company and had lived at Maraetai Beach with his wife Alaina and children Reuben, Dominic and Rosalie for many years. The family were known as stalwarts of the Beachlands Maraetai Rugby Football Club, respected for pitching in no matter what. Rich-

ard had coached several teams and served on the club’s committee for many years. A Beachlands Maraetai Rugby Football Club spokesman said the club held a special committee meeting on Sunday night to consider how to best support the bereaved family, which they intend on doing through a bank account which is also open to donations from the community. The spokesman said the Samuels family were a perfect fit for Beachlands Maraetai Rugby Football Club because of their love of rugby and true community spirit. “They were like glue, they were always there, all of them, he was al-

ways there for his kids, his wife was there too, they never missed a practice, a meeting, a training, a fundraiser,” the spokesman said. “He had a real passion for the game, and cared for the kids, every kid who was coached by him got a lift from it, that’s what he was about.” Both Samuels boys excelled in Rugby, Touch Rugby and Rugby League. The Beachlands Maraetai Touch Football Club also acknowledged the dedication that Richard Samuels had for the local touch club as a player, coach, manager and mentor. On the first night of the touch season next 29 (three luckyWednesday, winners already)

October, the club will be celebrating Richard’s commitment to the sport. A collection to support Richard’s family will be taken which will include donations from the bar takings, the touch committee and members. Touch club president Simon Williamson says the community is invited to come down to touch for the evening to enjoy one of Richard’s many passions. Richard Samuels lay in state at the family home in Maraetai from Sunday until Wednesday, receiving visits from all corners of the community. He was due to be returned to his home Marae at Matakohe in Northland on Wednesday.

2 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (October 24th 2014)

She’ll be right...then again, maybe not? THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz I recall, in the wake of the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan, Manukau City Council’s City Manager of the time sent out a press release assuring us that if an earthquake of that magnitude hit Manukau, then our Civil Defence was well prepared and could cope. Not sure if Tui billboards were around back then, but if they were my reaction would have been: Yeah right. The fact is that no matter how good our Civil Defence network is, if the disaster is big enough everyone will struggle to cope. That has since been evident in Christchurch where people lived for days, even weeks, after the big quake without basic necessities such as sewerage and water. So I did another “Yeah right” when I read a NZ Herald weekend headline that said Hospital ‘totally ready’ for Ebola. The headline writer did at least put quote marks around ‘totally ready’. It referred to Middlemore Hospital which has an infecTHE BIBLE SAYS: The LORD is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? tious diseases biocontainment unit able to hold a maximum of four Ebola patients. It does beg the question: what happens when we have 5 patients? Or 500.? This isn’t a criticism of Middlemore or the Counties Manukau DHB who at least seem to be putting some thought into what to do in the event this disease should reach us. I’m glad someone is because all I hear so far from the Government are bland assurances that it is “highly unlikely” to reach here, that we are well set-up if it does, and that Ebola is very hard to contract anyway. From what I’ve seen on the TV news, that doesn’t seem to be the case. An American nurse working in a modern Western hospital wearing a hazmat suit managed to catch it. A woman in Spain caught it after saying she had “touched her face.” If touching your face is all that’s needed, then it doesn’t sound very hard to catch! I also take with a grain a salt the assurances that we are too far away to be affected. The American nurse had apparently just taken an airline flight. If she had been sitting next to a Kiwi, Ebola could have been handing over its passport at Auckland International Airport the next day. Just because we don’t have direct flights to West Africa doesn’t mean Ebola can’t get here. The world in the

21st Century is a highly connected place. I’m a worry-wart by nature, but I would worry much less if I saw some evidence that the Government was at least thinking about this and making some contingency plans. Yet all John Key seems preoccupied with is whether or not we should help the Americans stop Isis. This terrorist group is a threat to peace in the Middle East. It isn’t a threat to peace here. However, Ebola isn’t interested in politics or geography – it’s just looking for the next carrier. It would be reassuring to see some statements from John Key outlining an Ebola strategy. Who would lead the response effort, which government department would take the lead, which hospitals would be involved, where would patients go once hospitals were full, what plans are there to enforce quarantines?, are there plans to have testing for Ebola done in this country? And I’m sure you can add to the list. What the Government should be doing is forget its fascination with Special Forces and things that go bang, and instead look at sending a properly trained and equipped medical team to help stop Ebola in West Africa and give help to West Africans who deserve the same level of health care and protection as the rest of us.

Police seek witnesses • FROM PAGE 1 brated Richard’s dedication to his family and to rugby describing him as a great friend, fantastic coach, and an inspiration. Here we go again! One of the delights of shopping is being able to sit and have a coffee with your friends. But wait, there’s more. How many times do you see a purse or a wallet on the table, or the counter, quite often unattended. I don’t need to say any more. A casual stroll around the supermarket, glancing wistfully at the goods you can purchase arrayed on the shelves, and your handbag sitting in the empty trolley just waiting to be picked up. You probably won’t even notice it is missing until you try to pay the bill. The same goes for the baby in the pram. So often the purse or handbag is just sitting alongside the child. Do I need to explain? Summer is also the time for missing lawn mowers. Don’t think just because you have just popped in for a quick coffee that the potential thief will take his or her break at the same time. In fact, that is the very time that the mower will go missing. Summer is a wonderful time, and all types of activities are taking place around the home. You should be able to relax in your own home, but just be aware that there are others out there who are only too happy to take anything you leave unattended. So don’t get paranoid, but please take care, and be watchful. . You can download an application form to join Crime Patrol at http://tinyurl.com/mv6yzqg or phone our local police station on 536 5839. Recipes use Clevedon foods, flavours SeaLink adds weekend Waiheke ferry service

• FROM PAGE 1 they want the book to focus on the recipes, not them. “We wanted it to be a fun project with a bit of humour,” says Rae. They only appear once in the book – photographed sitting around a table and all heavily disguised in animal costumes! But while a bit of humour is fine, the book’s main aim is to deliver lots of seriously good recipes. “It’s not a book with lots of kids throughout. We wanted a more wider community feel instead,” says Rae. “The recipe submitters are predominantly parents from the school. We’ve hand-picked people we know have culinary flair throughout the community and have got them to select recipes.” In total, the book has 96 recipes all based around a theme of hunting and gathering in Clevedon. The recipes include iconic Clevedon food products as well as foods that can be found throughout the area – whether oysters, wild pig or kumara. There is one fun recipe that is impossible to cook due to scarcity of the required ingredients in Clevedon – alligator being one! But the rest are tried and true recipes covering a wide range of food, sauces, sea food, desserts etc. It’s also quite a “blokey” book with lots of recipes that will appeal to men, such as kahawai fritters. Cooking royalty, in the person of former Clevedon resident Jo Seagar, has endorsed the book and written the foreword. The team did a lot of research into what made a good school cookbook, and what didn’t. “There were varying stories, some successful, some not so. What we learnt is less is more. The ones that had 25 people on their committee made it a lot harder to make decisions and get things done,” says Rae. Keeping a small tight group has meant the Clevedon book has been produced in a relatively short time. Local printer John Williams organised top quality printing at a bargain price and this, along with local sponsors throughout the book, means it has covered its costs before it even goes on sale. The women did all the work on the book themselves – design, photography etc – which has also kept production costs down. There is a print run of 2000 copies and the book goes on sale today for $35. This is a major fundraising event for the Clevedon School which looks forward to putting the funds into the following projects: • Replacing the old barbecue tables around the school where children eat their lunches, and which are all falling to pieces as they are so old. • Developing seating areas for children in and around the school – areas where friends can enjoy each other’s company. • Creating a junior school eating area and play area outside the library block. The aim is to establish that area for the juniors and provide them with some games and play areas as well as seating in the sun and shade to eat their lunch.

SeaLink is to add a weekend Pine Harbour to Waiheke Island service from October 25. This is part of its new Waiheke ‘Express’ fast ferry service from downtown Auckland. The Clevedon School fundraising cookbook. • Refurbishing and developing the friendship garden into a place for children to meet others when they are feeling lonely or have no one to play with during breaks. Peer mediators have some great ideas for the garden and just need the funds to make it all happen. • Refurbishing the entrance to the school – outside Room 1 and 2 and the administration block. There are currently problems with drainage, broken concrete, tree roots etc. It all needs to be pulled up and a new area developed. This needs to include new trees, seating, new drinking fountains, playground markings and gardens. • Moving the vegetable gardens from behind the library to the end of the admin block and establishing a garden area for the students to look after and use the produce. Says Rae: “A great fundraising campaign for the cookbook will enable us to really make an indent into some of these projects and will give our school the continued lift it needs.” The cookbook is available for sale at the Clevedon Farmers Market, local shops in Clevedon, coming events such as the fireworks and the A & P Show, and via the school’s website, www.clevedonschool. co.nz (“news and events”).

FEATURE PROPERTY: October 24, 2014

Beachlands - For Sale: Expressions of Interest Spinnaker Bay…big houses on small sections all crammed in together. Right? Wrong! Here’s a Spinnaker Bay property that most definitely does not fit that perception. It’s a big two storey family home with high studs, big windows, sweeping views and a large section with mature raised bark gardens and a swimming pool. What is particularly intriguing is that the property is on a slope - great for getting the views - but out back it has perhaps the flatest lawn I’ve ever seen, one big enough for a decent game of footie or backyard cricket. It is flanked by the raised bark gardens covered in maturing trees and shrubs and providing complete privacy. To one side is the pool, all properly fenced to the latest council standards. Pebbled and paved walkways makes it all maintenancefree which means time to spend with the kids enjoying the child-friendly property. The house has one of those huge entranceways that are all the thing these days, with stairs to the right while the left leads into the family and kitchen area. On the way is a coat cupboard - a nice welcoming touch. The central family dining area leads into a modern kitchen with granite bench top, plenty of pantry space, a six hob gas oven, rangehood and fridge with one of those digital control thingammies. Sliding windows open to the outdoor dining area so food can travel from kitchen to outside, or in the opposite direction if bbq is the preferred option. The dining area has access to the outdoors and also leads into what is currently a child’s play room but which could be a more formal dining room or perhaps

an office. Adjacent to that is the formal living area with gas fireplace. A small hallway leads past a big storage cupboard under the stairs, internal access to the double garage, a downstairs bedroom, spacious bathroom and a laundry with good bench space and access to an outdoor service area. The downstairs is great, especially with easy flow into the private outdoor area, but there’s a constant desire to rush upstairs to see what the view is like. So let’s go… The stairway opens into an upstairs living area and, yes, there’s the fabulous view that looks across Te Puru Park, to the estuary and beyond to Omana Regional Park. In the foreground is a reserve, with another reserve on the other side of the road. It all provides plenty of breathing space with the assurance this property will never be built out. A few metres away is a concrete path through to the Te Puru Community Centre. A side window overlooks the swimming pool so you can keep an eye on the kids. A private balcony allows you to step outside and enjoy the sun. Also upstairs are a bathroom and four more bedrooms including a master suite that comes with his ‘n’ her wardrobes and an ensuite. This is a modern, spacious family home that needs the laughter of young children to make it complete. ~ Duncan Pardon

Maraetai burglars roll car fleeing police Two offenders flipped and rolled their vehicle into a ditch while fleeing police after a daytime burglary in Maraetai last Monday. The pair, a 16-year-old and 21-year-old from Manurewa, who were unhurt, appeared in court the following day charged with burglary, unlawfully taking a vehicle and failing to stop

for Police. Neighbours alerted Police to the brazen early afternoon burglary in Albacore Way. “Two vehicles had backed up a driveway and the offenders were loading items from a house they had broken into,” says Beachlands constable Aaron Mataira. “One neighbour saw what they were doing

and another neighbour heard voices and saw them running in and out of the house. Both called the Police and gave a registration number.” The vehicles were linked to an alarm activation at a property in Flat Bush, earlier that morning, thought to have been a thwarted burglary attempt. Two televisions, a home

theatre system, laptop and jewellery were taken from the Maraetai home. A Police unit from Manurewa recognised one of the vehicles soon after. sPrinG is in the reaL estate air! Spring is definitely here; there’s a feeling of warmth and positivity in the office and the election paralysis that loomed over us has flown the coop. Even a few days after results were clear, we saw action start to ramp up. Open home numbers rose, enquiries increased and buyers came out of the woodwork to purchase property. In fact we’ve seen people take advantage of the new spring market in greater droves than we’ve seen for some time. Now that schools are back after a welcome break, we’re smack in the middle of the spring market. It’s this time of year we see a sense of urgency from those in the property market, as those looking to buy or sell are spurred to get their real estate goals sorted before the end of 2014 and the long January break. While we’re gearing up for a hectic few months before Christmas, let’s take a look at market trends and what happened during September. auckland region trends:

Market report Our Professionals Property Management team now holds the accolade of being one of the best in the country, as our superstars came away proudly holding the Runner Up Award from the hotly contested 2014 Awards for Excellence in Residential Property Management. Our Rental, Property Management and Administration Team is a well-oiled machine of 12 exceptional individuals, whose sole focus is to manage our extensive and growing rental portfolio. The REINZ award was decided on a variety of criteria, including office property management income, the greatest net growth of properties under management in the last 12 months and the lowest amount of tenant arrears. When you break this down to the crux of it, it all comes down to the fantastic customer experience we provide. On both sides of what can be a tough role, the team’s focus is all about managing the relationships between our homeowners and the people who live in the homes we rent or manage. We’re often split between opposing sides of the fence, and it takes unrivalled customer service to ensure we’re satisfying the needs of all our clients. And when you take into account the fact our Property Management specialists were competing against other real estate companies and branches from across the country for this prestigious award, whether you’re renting with us, or enlisting your investment into someone else’s hands, you know you’re in the safe hands of one of the nation’s best with our Rental and Property Management team.

September prices dipped a little from the previous month, but when we look at year-on-year results, 2014 is still well ahead of last year’s game, with a price uplift of 12.2% in Manukau City in the year to September. This was one of the Auckland region’s strongest results, which demonstrates the increasingly popularity of Manukau with buyers, due to its great amenities, fantastic transport routes and easy access to the airport and the South. And despite what was said about the election, September sales volumes eclipsed those of August, probably reflecting the rapid return to normality of the market post-election. We believe these results are just the beginning of the strong market we’ll witness from now until the end of the year. We’ll continue to keep you posted! Air quality bylaw adopted Auckland Council’s Regulatory and Bylaws Committee has adopted a draft Air Quality Bylaw to tackle Auckland’s air pollution. The proposed bylaw has been recommended as a way of meeting national air quality standards, as required by the Government. In winter, 75%of Auckland’s air pollution is due to fine particulate emissions (PM10) from open fires and old, non-compliant wood burners. The inhaling of fine particles - which can lodge in the lungs - has raised the level of respiratory illness in the region, a surprise to many who thought that vehicles or industry pollution was to blame. The proposed Air Quality Bylaw will focus on the management of indoor fires to reduce the emissions of these fine particles into our air. “It is hard to comprehend that the warmth emanating from that wood fire we enjoy on a cold winter night is the cause of serious health issues. By concentrating on the air pollution culprit in winter – indoor fires - we will not only achieve cleaner air, we will be well on our way to meeting national air quality standards,” says Calum Penrose, Chair, Regulatory and Bylaws Committee. The committee held a robust discussion about the various implementation timings of the bylaw and Councillor Penrose was pleased with the resulting recommendation of prohibiting both open PROVIDED fires and older wood burners (pre-2005) in October 2018.

New lifejacket laws here Auckland boaties are being urged to ‘suit up’ with lifejackets this summer as part of new navigation safety bylaws which come into effect on Labour Weekend. Auckland Council wants people to keep safe on the water this summer and this means being aware of new rules regarding lifejackets. The long weekend is the first time the council’s new Navigation Safety Bylaw will be in effect – the updated regulations focus on navigation safety for everyone on the water. “The most significant change, and the one that attracted a lot of public feedback through the public submission process, is a new rule requiring anyone on board a vessel of six metres or less to wear a lifejacket,” says the council’s Regulatory and Bylaws Committee Chairman, Calum Penrose. “Sadly, it’s all too common to hear that someone who has drowned,

or nearly drowned, were not wearing a lifejacket or had one on board but didn’t have time to put it on. We want to reduce the risk of that happening.” He says as a result of consultation council has given skippers the discretion to determine when lifejackets can be removed, if the conditions are suitable. “Our message to anyone going out in a boat is to take a lifejacket and wear it – it’s not going to save your life if you don’t have it on.” Auckland Council Harbourmaster Andrew Hayton says his team will be focussing on educating people on the new rules over the summer. “Our staff will be out at boat ramps and on the water talking to people and educating them about the new rules and creating greater awareness of the need to be well prepared.” The council is also simplifying signs at boat ramps, to help with greater understanding

and compliance. “We have developed a set of five icons and key messages that represent the important messages we want to get across to boaties – even those with limited maritime knowledge.” These will be rolled out through signage and other collateral so that over time they become widely recognised. The five key messages are: Lifejackets: take them, wear them Be a responsible skipper: keep everyone safe Carry a means of communication: mobile phone, VHS radio, flares or a beacon Reduce your speed: around people, vessels and the shore Avoid excessive alcohol. Another change includes having to nominate someone to be in charge of a vessel. For more information on Auckland Council’s Navigation Safety Bylaw go to aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/harbourmaster

ON THE WATER Coastguard Maraetai takes out special merit excellence award Outstanding commitment, attitude and professional high standards saw Coastguard Maraetai take out the Special Merit Award at this year’s Regional Awards of Excellence.. ‘With a 60% increase in incidents attended compared to the previous year and 460 people brought home to safety it’s clear the recipients of this award have been working incredibly hard, both behind the scenes and on the water’ said David Tommas, CEO – Coastguard’s Northern Region. The unit was also recognised for their high level of community engagement and fundraising,

education and training efforts which supports Coastguard’s mission of ‘saving lives at sea’. Coastguard Maraetai’s President, Mark Glover received the Coastguard Rescue Vessel Volunteer of the Year Award. Logging 560 hours, gaining Senior Operational Crew status, and his planning of training exercises as he worked towards his Master’s CoC, saw Mark receive a very worthy nomination. Recently standing down from his role as President of the unit after three years, Mark was awarded Coastguard Rescue Vessel Volunteer of the Year for excellence and his outstanding con-

tribution. “ Ta k i n g t h e u n i t through the trials and tribulations of introducing a new vessel, Mark’s changed the culture of the Unit to one that is professional and ready to cope with the adversity faced on a day to day basis. Mark’s attitude and approach to the operation of the unit has seen foundations laid to enable the unit to continue to evolve into the future.” said David Tommas, CEO – Northern Region. Coastguard Maraetai crew member, Phil Insley also snapped the winning photo that won Coastguard Maraetai the National Unit Photograph of the Year Award.

vigilant at all times and take necessary steps to keep their boats seaworthy and protect those on board,” says Coastguard New Zealand CEO Patrick Holmes. Boaties need to remember three simple messages before heading out: 1. Prep your boat – prepare your boat and make sure it’s safe 2. Check your gear – check you have the right safety equipment and it’s working 3. Know the rules – and know what to do if something goes wrong “They’re simple messages that save lives. On average 15 Kiwis lose their lives in boating accidents each year – this year already 14 boaties have lost their lives at sea. This is 14 too many and some simple preparation before heading out can avoid potential disaster. “Finding accurate tide and marine weather forecast information before launching and having two separate waterproof communication devices on board is a good start. “It is vital that skippers know the Boating Safety Code and adhere to its five simple rules, including skipper responsibility and wearing and taking lifejackets.” said Patrick Holmes.
